Versant English Placement Test (VEPT)

The Graduate ELL & ITA Program administers the Versant English Placement Test (VEPT), a computer-based English language assessment that measures proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The VEPT assigns scores along the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), a globally recognized English proficiency scale, and generates a detailed report. We use the VEPT to diagnose a student’s existing language abilities and as a resource for educational planning.

Departmental partners that wish to assess the English language proficiency of their non-native English-speaking graduate students may contact us to arrange VEPT assessment.

Writing Sample

The Graduate ELL & ITA Program takes a writing sample to assess a student’s current graduate academic writing level. The writing sample asks students to close read a graduate-level passage, evaluate the author’s argument, and apply relevant issues in the passage to scientific research and education. The sample is evaluated for reading comprehension, level of analysis, organizational structure, and sentence-level clarity.

The VEPT and a writing sample are required for graduate students who either:
  • Hold an admissions condition that requires them to take an English language assessment; or
  • Intend to work as a Teaching Assistant and are subject to a departmental language requirement.


*Currently, prospective students who do NOT hold an admissions condition or have been referred by their department for Teaching Assistantship are not required to complete the VEPT before enrolling in courses. A writing sample will typically be taken during the first week of classes.
